Dita Von Teese recently interviewed with Inked magazine for their March issue. The interviewer asked some compelling questions, not the typical crap journalists are always asking. (Although the questions about her ex-husband, Marilyn Manson, seem to still apply even though they’ve been divorced for what? 2 years now? Jeez, let the girl forget her mistake!) Anyway, one question had me raising my eyebrows:

Q. What do you think of L.A. “burlesque” groups like the Pussycat Dolls?

A. I did a lot of shows with them, but I had a lot of legal issues with their creator over the years. It’s so far removed from what it originally was. I think it’s really great they decided to become a pop group and they’ve left the pseudo-burlesque alone. It drives me crazy when the media or groups like the Pussycat Dolls try to sanitize and take away the sexual and nudity aspects of burlesque. I’m sorry, but if you’re not up there taking your clothes off and dancing around in pasties and a G-string, it’s not burlesque. It can be cabaret, or it can be cute and funny and retro-showgirly, but it’s not burlesque. They were strippers, and that’s the way it was.

Well, finally! I’m so glad someone said it. Even better that Dita has, since she is the reigning queen of burlesque. I’m so tired of psuedo-burlesque scene queens and wannabe pin-up girls! So much so that I started this blog.

When did it become okay for women to tease? If I’m going to throw down some hard-earned cash on entrance fees, website memberships and tickets to your show, I’d like to at least see some tits.

I remember when Dita first came on the scene (or, rather when she went mainstream) all of these burlesque troops popped up in major cities everywhere. I suppose I should be happy the burlesque revival is getting a lot of media attention, but it became a watered down version of the original somewhere along the way. What should be a full-on strip tease out of Mr. Pearl corsets and 100% real nylon stockings has become a group of wannabes in Hot Topic lingerie and go-go boots pretending to be lesbians and giving each other spankings. Borrring!

Dita, you’ve set the bar too high!

Ps. Does anyone else find it funny that a magazine about tattoos does a feature on someone whose only tattoo is a beauty mark? I’m not knocking her tattoo, it’s really cute. I’d get one if I didn’t already have a beauty mark.

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Dita has her own stockings brand. But where to buy them? Secrets in Lace of course! In fact, Secrets in Lace has the largest selection of full fashioned stockings in the world!

But what are the advantages of wearing full fashioned stockings?

Anyone who has worn regular stockings with stretch lycra and faux seams, even for just a few hours, knows how hard it is to keep those seams straight. It can get annoying having to constantly fix your stockings. Full fashioned stockings are more stable and your seams will stay straight. Remember they are made of non-stretch nylon, therefore they do not stretch! They are shaped to the leg and you will need to buy the proper size for your leg, else if you stretch them, they will start to slide down. You will be able to tell the difference between real nylon stockings and shitty .99 cent store lycra stockings!

A. “I have been obsessed with seamed stockings my whole life, and I would collect vintage ones that were made in the ’40s and ’50s with the authentic styling of the keyhole, the welt, the reinforced toe and heels, French or Cuban heels, and hand-stitched seams. Dita Von Teese is hands-down the most in-demand burlesque belle on the face of the earth – and even though she’s practically considered royalty across Europe thanks to her chic, choreographed dance/stripping routines, she can’t understand why so many in her native America still have so many reservations toward “burlesque” as an art form.

“I don’t mean to America bash, but it is interesting that burlesque is an American invention. Burlesque as we know it and the great burlesque that was prevalent in America in the 30’s and 40’s in big theaters with big stars that were in the movies and on TV and wrote books. It’s shocking to imagine it is now 75 years later and people are still saying ‘I don’t get it, she’s a stripper,’” Von Teese told Tarts at the Samuel French bookshop in Studio City on Friday night where she was signing copies of her new flip-book “Dita Stripteese.”

“I don’t mind being called [that] because that is what I do, but I don’t understand why there is such a taboo attached to it. Basically what I do is like an actress that has nude scenes in a movie, it’s part of the role and its part of what my show is. It’s not really any different. I think it’s just too easy for people to criticize.”

And while Teese said she’s had to overcome numerous critics since starting her shows in underground strip clubs in her early 20’s, these days most of her fans are actually female.

“When I first started doing what I do, a lot of my fans were men. A lot of them were comic book fans, Bettie Page fans and into that sort of thing. It is interesting the way it has shifted and the majority of my fans are women now. Probably 80 percent, but I can see why,” Teese explained. “I started thinking about that more over past several years why that is and I think a lot of women like to see another kind of sex symbol that doesn’t fit into the blonde, tanned, California beach babe beauty. I can never fit into that role so I think there are other women like me that say ‘no, me neither’ and there are things that make us feel good about ourselves. I don’t need to have a tan to feel sexy. It’s not like you have to have these things, a lot of women see what I do and the way that I portray sensuality is another version. It’s the opposite of all of that, you can put on red lipstick and put on black gloves and you can curl your hair and play dress-up. Then if you’re tired of it you can just get rid of it. It is not like you have to go to a tanning salon and do all these things to make yourself a certain way, it’s something you can try on and leave.”

Speaking of looks, here’s something we don’t hear everyday in Tinseltown: Teese actually likes looking older!

“When I’m scrubbed clean people can’t even consider that I’m the same girl. I get a lot younger, everything thinks I’m about 23,” she added. “People say that don’t understand why I wear all that makeup because it makes me look so older but I never had the intention of looking younger. In fact I always wanted to be older than I was.”

So when does the 37-year-old starlet and ex-wife of Marilyn Manson feel the most fabulous?

“I feel sexy when I’m in love and with somebody that thinks I’m the best thing ever with or without all my hair and makeup, when I’m just totally myself,” Teese said. “I feel sexy when I’m having fun whether its on stage and having fun and I think its hilarious that I’m doing what I do or whether I’m with my friends and family that really know me. It’s all about your degree of confidence and how much fun you have in your life.”

The German photographer describes his work in a very pragmatic way: “As a fetishist, I take fetish photos,” says Peter W. for Czernich. Since 1996 he has taken over 3000 pictures of Dita Von Teese. The best photos are in the book “Vintage Dita.” Czernich publishers the fetish magazine “Marquis.”

In the past 20 years Sean McCall has had many prominent individuals before the lens. Angelina Jolie, Bo Derek, Muhammad Ali, Chris Farley. And: Dita Von Teese. McCall is versatile. The American turns film and photographs into advertisement, style and performance.
